"It doesn't matter if it's a guy on my team or the opposition, I just hate to see guys on the ice like that. You never know," said Oilers forward Petr Sykora. "At least he was talking by the time the trainer came out."
After the Oilers jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead, Gilbert, skating in the Edmonton zone with his head down, took an elbow in the chest from the Blue Jackets enforcer. The blow cut Gilbert's lip and knocked him back with enough momentum that he banged his head on the ice. He was out cold but came around and left the ice with assistance from a couple of teammates.
Gilbert spent the night in a hospital in Columbus.
