Dry spell ends for Sykora

OTTAWA -- Petr Sykora figured it was just a matter of time.

Last night the Edmonton Oilers centre scored a pair of goals in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Ottawa Senators.

"I knew it was going to come sooner or later," Sykora said. "The first goal, it went through a lot of bodies and the second goal I had a lot of time, so I could really pick the corner.

"That's the way it goes sometimes. You get a lot of chances and nothing goes in, and all of a sudden in the third period you get two shots and you score two goals."

Sykora had gone eight games without a goal before potting his pair last night. He'd also scored just one in 15 games.

"It was a nice play by Raffi (Torres) on the second to get his stick in the passing lane," said Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish. "But Petr, you put him in that position and he's going to score goals. He's got a great shot and we needed a little bit more of that on some of the quality chances we had."

Sykora scored his 19th goal of the season 25 seconds into the third on the power play.

The goal cut the Senators lead to 2-1. With them up 3-1 later in the period, Sykora was the beneficiary of a turnover and fired a shot past Senators goaltender Martin Gerber with 4:12 left in the game.

Tom Gilbert then went on to score the tying goal with 19.9 seconds left on the clock to earn the point.

Sykora was selected to take the Oilers second attempt in the shootout, but was stopped by Gerber.

"I think we take a lot of positives from the game," Sykora said. "We came back against one of the best teams in the East. We came up on the short side again. But I think if we keep playing the way we are, it's going to turn around, we're going to put a winning streak together."
